I'll explain more later, but right now, here's my review on the new episode of Sonic Boom, which aired on Thursday, July 16th, 2015.
"Chili Dog Day Afternoon"
It starts with Amy about to boss her friends into building a stage for the Chili Dog Cook-Off competition. Sonic was saying how he shouldn't get involved, since he'll be judging the competition (shocker.
) and wants to remain impartial, to which Amy countered by saying no stage, no contest, thus, no chili dogs to judge. Sonic decides to help just as Tails was about to hit a nail through a board with a hammer... until Knuckles, using Amy's hammer, of all things, hits the nail and the board, causing it to catapult Sonic right into Amy!
As Amy got up and complained to Sonic about the things she had to do, or rather, the things she wanted her friends her friends to do in order to complete the stage, Tails, Knuckles, & Sticks managed to finish it themselves. As Knuckles thanked Sonic for keeping Amy distracted while they finished and Sonic commented that is was because of the promise of a free chili dog, Amy inspected the stage and saw something strange... a banana put in through a hole holding the stage up. Before Tails could warn Amy that it's a load bearing banana, Amy removed it and the stage fell apart. Amy asked who would actually build using a banana?! Take a wild guess... I'll give ya a hint, it's the big red echidna eating a plank of wood!
Frustrated, Amy decides to build the stage herself. Later, when she's done, instead of seeing her friends impressed with her work, she sees them at Meh Burger, trying to make silly bets when they win the competition. Then, Dave brings a plate of chili dogs, bragging about how he'll win the Cook-Off with his super-secret chili recipe. Sonic tastes one and instantly depicts the ingredients used in the chili; specifically ketchup, wasabi, and chunks of expired pigeon meat!
Part of me found that creepy... but then I think I shouldn't be that surprised. It is Sonic, after all!
As Dave scurries away, embarrassed that Sonic figured it out so quickly, Amy joined them letting them know the stage was finished. As Team Sonic thanked her, Sticks asked if it could be used as a floatation device.
Knuckles commented how he's got the winning chili in the bag... as he pulled out a box... and a bag was inside the box.
And inside the bag was what he called his secret weapon, a one-of-a-kind pepper, which had the color pattern of a tiger. This caused Tails, Amy, & Sticks to groan... because each of them had the very same "one-of-a-kind" pepper! Turns out the crook who sold them these falsely unique peppers from a cart... was an old wolf lady. The gang soon confronted her about lying that these were one-of-a-kind peppers. The old lady tried to deny it, only to have a delivery guy come in with a crate of those very peppers! He spilled it and said that there were 20 more crates to be delivered to her. The old lady claimed she would give them refunds, only to hop on her bike towing her cart and tried to make a quick getaway... Only to crash into the stage! (Great, now I can't trust old ladies.
) Knuckles, wanting to win that trophy for the Cook-Off, sets out to find a unique pepper. Deep in the jungle, Knuckles would find a pepper... a glowing pepper. He takes a bite out of it... and it's so dang hot, he ends up passing out! (Holy Jalapeño!
) Later, back at the repaired Cook-Off stage, as Tails, Amy, & Sticks were cooking their chili, Knuckles proclaims he's found the perfect chili pepper; hot with an indescribable flavor. Suddenly, Eggman appears... with the intention of entering the Cook-Off with a chili pepper that glowed even brighter than Knuckles' pepper. Calling it the Facepeeler Maximus, he sticks it in his Chili-Maker 5000, which looks like a small blender and can extract the very essence of the pepper which will result in creating a chili dog of unprecedented potency. And he might be right as a drop of the liquid pepper coming from his Chili-Maker engulfed his bowl in flames! (You know, this is like the second time we see Eggman get super crazy serious with chili dogs...) Feeling depressed, Knux threw his pepper away. Just then, the old wolf lady, who was hiding behind a tree, got Knuckles' attention and told him about a real, honest to goodness, one-of-a-kind pepper known as The Lost Pepper of Claggerhorn. She tells him she has this one-of-a-kind map that will lead him to the pepper he seeks in order to win. Knux pays her and runs off... just as the delivery guy delivers a crate full of those "one-of-a-kind" maps! ( *Sighs* Regular or buff, Knuckles will always be gullible...
) So, it starts with Knuckles climbing a mountain, but as soon as he reaches a cliff, it breaks off and he's rock sliding down the mountain. As soon as he stops, nearly falling into a canyon, he wants to do that again!
Later, Knuckles makes it to The Staircase of Terrifying Slipperiness, which is pretty much an icy mountain. He tries to simply walk up the icy stairs, but after slipping and falling back down 4 times, Knuckles begins using his hands, or more specifically, his fists, to make his way up the icy stair structure. Once he reaches the top, he enters... The Field of Baby Ducks? Knuckles encounters an adorable baby duck... which explodes when he pets it?! Exploding Baby Ducks?! Who Comes Up With That?! Of course, with Knuckles being Knuckles, he encounters another baby duck, he picks it up and pets it, and it explodes... and it happens again... and again... and again... and... Well, you see where this is going.
After 88 ducks exploded in his face, Knuckles jumps out of the bushes and howls like a wolf... for some reason... And for some reason there's a speaker with a button on it... Knuckles presses the button and an automated voice congratulated Knuckles for successfully traversing The Lands of The Doomed. Suddenly, a recliner zooms in from behind, forcing Knuckles to sit on it. It then traps Knux's arms in the armrests as a pie, some nuts, and ANOTHER exploding duck (
) hit him in the face before he ends up falling down into a deep canyon and getting knocked out. Upon waking up, Knuckles finds himself tied to ground, Gulliver style. A booming voice in a Scottish accent asks what it Knuckles seeks. Knux answers The Lost Pepper of Claggerhorn. When asked why, he says to roast it over an open flame, tear the seeds from its insides, chop it into tiny pieces, scald it in boiling oil, and use it to flavor his chili to win a trophy. When finished with his statement, he looks to see that he was tied up by walking, talking, chili peppers! And the one speaking, wearing an eyepatch and a kilt, was the very Pepper of Claggerhorn Knux was looking for! He quickly added that statement was the opposite of his true intentions before things got bad for him.
When Knux questioned the small bite mark on his head, the pepper said it was a scar to remind them of their home they lost. He continues to tell the tale of their past: Their home of Claggerhorn was full of lush green meadows, majestic mountains, and relaxing hot springs of legend. He continued on by saying of a prophecy that a big dumb oaf will come and lead his people back to said hot springs. Instantly seeing how Knuckles fits said prophecy to a tee, the peppers proclaimed to retake their land. Meanwhile, as the Chili Dog Cook-Off was underway, and Eggman's Chili-Maker was beginning to spark and smoke, the sounds of the war crying peppers took them by surprise as Knuckles, wearing a golf hat, a kilt, and Scottish face paint, charged with peppers on his shoulders. He then used a slingshot to fire the peppers at the people in the Cook-Off. Sticks hit one of the peppers with her boomerang, causing him to collide into Eggman's Chili-Maker and turning it into rocket, flying like crazy until it hit the stage and sent it into the ocean. Good news, though... It floats.
Two more peppers attacked Eggman's sides. The doc ordered Orbot & Cubot to deal with them, but in trying to hit the peppers, they only end up hitting Eggman instead!
Sonic, having seen enough of this, tries to talk some sense into Knuckles, all while dodging more incoming peppers. The leader pepper told Knuckles that he would have to make a choice: Either his old friends or his new ones. He soon leaped off of Knuckles' hat with a tiny sword in his hand towards Sonic. Realizing what he had to do, Knuckles quickly grabbed the lid of a pot and used it as a shield, causing the lead pepper to bounce off it and right into one of the contestants' chili filled pots. When Knuckles went to see if the pepper was okay, he was... relaxed... comparing the contents to the hot springs of old... only with expired pigeon meat.
Guess we know who that pot belongs to!
Soon after, the pepper people were in the chili filled pots. They get a relaxing hot spring, while everyone else gets flavorful chili. When the Pepper Leader asked what they planned to do with the chili, Sonic replied that it would be used to be put on a hot dog. Outraged by this, the pepper was about to declare the truce over... until Sonic fed him a chili dog. His rage was subsided.
When Sonic tasted the chili dog with Knuckles' brand of chili, he declared Knux the winner of the Cook-Off. ... ... ... Except... it was a chili pepper induced dream sequence in Knuckles' head!
Turns out, after eating that glowing pepper, Knux was knocked out and missed the Cook-Off entirely! Sonic, Tails, Amy, & Sticks ends up finding him. When Knux explains what happened, Sonic didn't believe that a pepper could be that strong... until Knuckles belched out a fireball burning the gang in the process!
Man, was this episode crazy or what?! It definitely fit the kind of crazy you'd expect from current Cartoon Network cartoons. At first, I was like "WTF is going on here?" But when it was revealed to be a dream in Knuckles' head, it made perfect sense to me! That's the kind of randomness I would think be in the head of that version of Knuckles.
*Whew...* That took a while to complete. So much crazy!
